The Black Family Ministry Project of the National Council of Churches of Christ USA, Inc. is sponsoring a national family conference, "Strengthening Black Families for a New Millennium" at the Renaissance Concourse Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia, December 2-4, 1999. This conference is for local church laity, Christian educators, social workers, clergy, students, seminarians, psychologists and all those dedicated to black families.
Workshops are scheduled for one hour and thirty minutes in length. They will convene on Friday, December 3, 1999, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Learning Option I) and 3:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. (Learning Option II). This conference, in addition to workshops, will also include: Panel discussions, Worship services, Keynoters, Booth exhibits, Models of ministry, Denominational family circles.
Dr. Andrew Billingsley is a Professor in the Department of Sociology, The Institute for Families in Society and The African American Studies Program, at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. He is also emeritus Professor of Family Studies at the University of Maryland and Visiting Scholar-in-Residence at Benedict College in Columbia, SC.
Dr. Billingsley earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Grinnell College in Iowa. He received his Master of Social Work degree at Boston University (1956), Master of Arts in Sociology at Michigan University (1960), and a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Social Research at the Florence Heller School of Brandeis University in Massachusetts (1964).
Dr. Billingsley is the author of six books and more than two hundred fifty technical and professional papers. His most recent book is "Mighty Like a River: The Black Church and Social Reform". He also authored "Climbing Jacobs Ladder", "Black Families in White America", "Children of the Storm" and co-authored many others.
Dr. Billingsley received numerous honors and rewards for his outstanding works such as the 1992 DuBois, Johnson, Frazier Award, the 1990 Distinguished Scholar Award, the 1989 Marie Peters Award and the 1972 Distinguished Speaker Award.
