| The
Bible speaks about poverty: Psalms 70:1-5
1 Be pleased, O God, to deliver
me. O Lord, make haste to help me! 2 Let those be put to shame and
confusion who seek my life. Let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire to
hurt me. 3 Let those who say, "Aha, Aha!" turn back because
of their shame. 4 Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let
those who love your salvation say evermore, "God is great!" 5 But
I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not
delay!

Good works that 'work':
Dismal child-care statistics in California underscore the need that
prompted a model project of the California Council of Churches and Catholic Charities of
California. Begun in 1999, the project has increased quality
child-care services in areas of greatest need. It offers support for
congregations in low-income areas of six counties for any child-care and development
service they envisioned. |
Poverty
by the numbers:
In 1999, the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development reported that 4.9 million U.S. households comprising 10.9 million people
faced "worst-case" housing needs - defined as unassisted renters with incomes
below 50 percent of the local area median income who pay more than half of their income
for housing or live in severely substandard housing. These numbers do not include
the nation's 300,000 homeless. (Habitat
