        TUESDAY, MARCH 5
The Bible speaks about poverty:

Proverbs 10:1515 The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their ruin.

Poverty datebook for today:

"National Day of Action," on the Capitol Mall and at the Department of Health and Human Services, beginning at 1 p.m., Washington, DC, sponsored by The National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support

Bread for the World Institute in Washington, DC, hosts a March 5-7 conference on biotechnology and hunger in Africa, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.   Info: David Beckmann, (202) 639-9400 or mailto:dbeckmann@bread.org

Good works that 'work':

The Good News Mountaineer Garage, serving low-income people in West Virginia, is literally putting wheels under a great idea that addresses transportation problems as a barrier to employment.  The West Virginia Council of Churches has partnered with the state Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR) and other organizations to provide donated vehicles to low-income people who otherwise could not get to a job. Recipients obtain the vehicles for the cost of repairs.

Poverty by the numbers:

Minimum Wage Below Poverty Line
A full-time worker receiving today’s minimum wage of $5.15 earns only about 80 percent of the poverty line for a family of three.  (National Jobs for All Coalition)

Preaching about poverty:

"Poverty: Inside and Out."  The Rev. Robert McCluskey, Swedenborgian Church.
