The Bible speaks about poverty:

Psalms 41: 1-31 Happy are those who consider the poor;the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble. 2 The Lord protects them and keeps them alive; they are called happy in the land. You do not give them up to the will of their enemies.

Good works that 'work':

"Partners in Hope" is a 20-year commitment by the Atlanta-based Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to give hope to people in the nation’s poorest counties, all in rural areas. The goal -- to remove them from the list of counties with the highest percentage of people living below the poverty level.   One example: "Delta Dawning: A Partnership of Hope," is a collaborative effort of area residents and churches, Mississippi CBF and other groups to combat poverty in the state's three poorest counties - Sharkey, Holmes and Sunflower counties.

8.5 Million Children Without Health InsuranceIn the United States, 8.5 million children were without health insurance in 2000, or 11.9 percent of all  children under age 18.  (U.S. Census)
