        TUESDAY, MARCH 19
The Bible speaks about poverty:

Proverbs 19:17  17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.

Poverty datebook for today:

"The Faiths and Faith Based Initiatives: What is Really Happening?", sponsored by the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at National City Christian Church, Thomas Circle (Massachusetts Ave. at 14th St. NW), Washington, DC.  Information: email Jduplain@aol.com.

Good works that 'work':

Hunger No More: Decisions 2002 is an easy-to use packet of educational materials for Christian congregations.  A unique cooperative effort of 18 Christian organizations, including the National Council of Churches, it was produced by Bread for the World in conversation with Islamic and Jewish groups and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Poverty by the numbers:

Fact Illustrated
The poverty rate for inner-city communities in 2000 was 16.1 percent, compared with 7.8 percent for suburban areas.  Rural and small town poverty stood at 13.4 percent.   (Institute for Research on Poverty, University of Wisconsin)

Preaching about poverty:
