        SUNDAY, MARCH 10
The Bible speaks about poverty:

I Corinthians 13:1-3   1 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast,  but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Poverty datebook for today:

"Health and Welfare Sunday" The United Church of Christ urges its congregations to use the day to advocate and educate on important health and welfare issues. Information packets are available by contacting Ms. Barbara Baylor, Minister for Health and Wellness, Justice and Witness Ministries.  Phone (216) 736-3708.

Good works that 'work':

Families make up the fastest-growing portion of Arizona’s homeless population.  Often "invisible" to others because they usually live in their cars, a surprising number of these families can be found in Prescott, Arizona. They come with their children to look for help at places like OPEN DOOR, which is marking one year of service today (March 10).

Poverty by the numbers:

Food and Shelter Emergencies Increasing
In 2001, requests for emergency food aid grew by 23 percent and requests for emergency shelter increased by 13 percent over 2000 in 27 cities surveyed. (U.S. Conference of Mayors)

Preaching about poverty:

"Being and Becoming a Neighbor: Biblical Reflections." Euyakaim Mar Coorilos, Diocesan Bishop of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India, Diocese of Europe and North America.
