GOOD WORKS THAT 'WORK'
'Holding Children in Prayer: A Lenten Guide Developed by the NCC and Children's Defense Fund'

People who engage in advocacy on behalf of the nation's children face daunting tasks, growing needs and many struggles in the public policy arena. What keeps them going? For many, it is faith that inspires their efforts, says Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Lenten GuideChildren's Defense Fund (CDF), which provides a strong and effective voice for all the children of America. For 15 years, CDF has worked with the religious community to respond to the needs of poor and neglected children. And, out of that partnership, religious leaders of several faiths have noted "the need for greater spiritual sustenance to help advocates hold on and keep struggling to protect children," says Edelman. "We decided to develop materials encouraging child advocates to meditate and pray--each in his or her own tradition--about their work with and for children."

One result of that agreement is Holding Children in Prayer, A Lenten Guide, developed in cooperation with the National Council of Churches. Designed for use by Christians in personal devotions, the booklet offers a scripture reading, brief reflection and prayer for each day.

Says Edelman, "The Lenten discipline of this little book will be repaid in renewed faith and grace to continue serving and advocating for children."
