GOOD WORKS THAT 'WORK'
'To End Poverty, Make Sure All Kids Get a Good Education'

The bad news is that Pennsylvania has been rated as one of the eight worst states in the nation when it comes to disparity in educational opportunity--and that the problem of inequality in our public schools is widespread across the United States.

The good news is that Good Schools Pennsylvania, a grassroots movement for education reform in that state, offers a unique model to our nation of how we might advocate for funding equity and quality education for all children.

As a member of the Founding Council of Good Schools Pennsylvania, the National Council of Churches believes in the group's approach of involving congregations in public education advocacy, especially in relation to financial equity in school spending. NCC member communions in Pennsylvania have formed more than 800 groups of ten persons each to study and act in support of educational reform. And the NCC has received commitments from other faith communities that resulted in another 129 groups of ten. The NCC and its member communions also have supported monthly interfaith prayer vigils at the State Capitol in Harrisburg.

This partnership with Good Schools Pennsylvania helps to implement the NCC's 1999 policy statement on public education in America. The NCC's Public Education Committee, part of its work in Ministries in Christian Education, continues to give leadership to efforts that make real our commitment to a quality education for every child.
