NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES POVERTY UPDATE for JUNE 2002 . . .
A Micah 6 Church Story
From Living Micahs Call: Doing Justice, Loving Kindness, Walking Humbly With
God: A Guide for Congregations
All Saints Episcopal Church runs a Community Development Corporation (CDC) that works predominantly in the housing projects near their church in Hoboken, New Jersey. Members of the church financially support the CDC and some members also volunteer. The purpose of this CDC is to build relationships between members of the congregation and residents in nearby public housing buildings. Currently, the Community Development Corporation of All Saints runs a summer camp and an after-school program for neighborhood children. The CDC also offers courses in computer literacy.
The church is in the process of building a community center in the housing projects as a place for recreation and fellowship in the community. This is the churchs first effort to construct and manage a building. Groundbreaking for the new community center was celebrated in the summer of 2001. Church members are currently working on a capital campaign to raise money for the building itself.
