The NCC Racial Justice Program

Working for racial justice is central to the life of the National Council of Churches.

The Racial Justice Program sustains the Racial Justice Working Group, nourishing fifty projects and organizations. Some are existent within the denominations, others are community-based grassroots projects across the nation.

Developed in conjunction with the Racial Justice Working Group, the Racial Justice Program is organized into: organizing and advocacy, anti-racism education and training, research and documentation, support cultivation and resource coordination and development.

Current programmatic themes include: racist violence, prison industrial complex, police brutality, self-determination, self-governance and continuing the Ecumenical Bail Bond Fund.  Our work stands on the foundation of the Racial Justice policy adopted by the NCC Governing Board in 1984.

The Racial Justice Program and the Racial Justice Working Group will also concentrate on enhancing publications that will highlight the work of the National Council of Churches in the struggle to overcome racism.  The program is also looking forward to developing significant work around the Mobilization to Overcome Poverty.

The NCC/CWS sent a team to the 2001 U.N. World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa.  Click here for full coverage.
