for Women Program Ministry Co Chairs: Carmen Alicia Nebot, United Church of Christ Staff: Karen Hessel Justice for Women has made the poverty mobilization a major priority and published a resource in August 2001, "Staying on Course, Navigating the Shifting Tides of Government and Church Partnerships." Distribution to date includes denominational womens programs, hunger and economic justice networks and some regional and local ecumenical partners. Single copies are available on request and multiple copies at cost; may also be downloaded from NCCC website. Justice for Women is identifying key locations at which to hold Women in Poverty hearings where model projects (best and promising practices) can be identified and celebrated. A summary of the data gathered will be prepared. Justice for Women is preparing for the publication of Women at the Well Volume 2 by Judson Press. It is scheduled for 2002 which leaves room for additional meditations in response to the events of September 11, 2001. AFRUS-Aids is a new initiative that is developing into a partnership of faith based and NGO organizations with strong womens networks in Africa. Through the All Africa Conference of Churches and Groots International and with partners in the US and Africa, this emerging partnership will identify small grass roots womens projects that tackle the HIV Aids Challenge and advocate for funding from a variety of sources, including the UN Development Programme. Also in planning is a new initiative for involving young adult women in ecumenical life, building on challenges that emerged from the WCC Ecumenical decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women, 1988-98. The Justice for Women Working Group has served the NCCC for almost 25 years offering leadership and resources for education and advocacy. The Working Group is made up of representatives from member communions and related faith groups who share a commitment to working together ecumenically, bringing special focus to projects that can be realistically implemented with limited resources and creative joint work. The Justice for Women Working Group actively seeks to be racially and ethnically diverse, and advocates within our denominations and the NCCC to work for these goals. Primarily, denominational staff work together ecumenically, in partnerships with others, to accomplish specific goals and implement programs that contribute to justice for women in an ecumenical context. These build on, strengthen, and enhance but not duplicate denominational or other ecumenical efforts. We hold to the commitment to not do separately that which we can best do together. Our history celebrates that what we do together makes a difference. Participating denominations/organizations include:Christian Church, Disciples |
