Church World Service Commits Initial $250,000 to Turkey Earthquake Response

August 19, 1999, NEW YORK CITY – Church World Service is committing an initial $250,000 for humanitarian response to needs of survivors of Tuesday’s earthquake in Turkey, including $100,000 from the CWS Blanket Fund for bedding, tents and tarps.

CWS and its members are part of a global ecumenical network, which is:

- Assessing unmet needs. The Middle East Council of Churches has dispatched staffer Edmond Adam to Istanbul. He will report to the Action by Churches Together consortium, of which CWS is a part, which coordinates global ecumenical response following disasters. In turn, ACT will issue a specific appeal next week.

- Readying cash, material and technical assistance. In addition to the $100,000 in CWS Blanket Funds, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a CWS member, has pledged $100,000 to the ecumenical response effort. Commitments from other CWS members are expected shortly.

Contributions may be sent to Church World Service, Attn. Turkey Response, 28606 Phillips Street, PO Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515. Telephone: 1-800-297-1516, ext 222. For more information and updates and/or to make an on-line contribution, go to: http://www.churchworldservice.org
