Bishop Talbert is a past president of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (1996-99), a leader in the World Council of Churches, and Bishop in the United Methodist Church. He recently retired after years of service as a pastor and District Superintendent. In 1973 he was elected General Secretary for the General Board of Discipleship and served in that capacity until his election to the office of Bishop. During his tenure as Bishop he served as Secretary for the Council of Bishops and was the Chief Ecumenical Officer for eight years.

The California-Nevada United Methodist Foundation established an endowment fund in his name which benefits the Fund for Africa University, and the Elhelou D. Talbert Shelter for Girls, in Manila, and the California-Nevada Bishop’s Discretionary Fund for Outreach Ministries.

Mel Talbert has been recognized for his leadership in the United Methodist Church and in ecumenical circles worldwide. Also, he is constantly involved in local issues and concerns requiring his prophetic leadership on issues of peace and social and economic justice and human rights. He has championed civil rights causes throughout his life.
