DeWinter is named Donor Relations Director
for National Council of Churches USA

New York, September 21, 2009 -- A United Church of Christ clergywoman with wide ranging missionary, ecumenical and fund-raising experience has been named Director of Donor Relations for the National Council of Churches.

The Rev. Deborah DeWinter, World Council of Churches Program Executive for the United States since 2003, will begin this assignment in the NCC's Development Office on October 6.

"Deborah has been a close colleague for many years and she clearly has gifts and experience that will serve the Council well," said the Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, NCC General Secretary. DeWinter will become part of a team headed by Kurt Kaboth, NCC Director of Resource Development.

During her time at the World Council of Churches U.S. Office, as staff for the U.S. Conference, Deborah was responsible for promoting, developing and strengthening relationships with U.S. member churches and other ecumenical partners of the WCC in the United States.

DeWinter was the first executive director, from February 2002 to August 2003, of FilmAid International, a New York-based NGO formed to use film and video to promote health, strengthen communities and enrich the lives of the world's vulnerable and uprooted peoples. She developed the programming, staffing and fund-raising capabilities of FilmAid, including a successful major gifts program based on high profile events featuring major film and Broadway personalities.

Earlier, she had been a consultant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, Switzerland, for planning, funding and evaluating an international conference on the reception and integration of resettled refugees.

From 1996 to 1999, DeWinter was associate director for program and administration of the NCC/Church World Service immigration and refugee program in New York.

She was program director for resettlement of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service in New York from 1991 to 1996, and pastor of Sheridan Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Neb., from 1990-1991.

DeWinter was a missionary of the Division of Global Ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Hong Kong from 1986 to 1990. She was ordained in the ELCA in 1986 and in 1995 joined the United Church of Christ where she has full ministerial standing.

"Deborah will be a high value addition to our development team, allowing us to reach further into the ecumenical community to connect with our friends who have a heart for strong support of the National Council of Churches and its programs," said Kurt Kaboth, NCC Director of Resource Development.
