May 2002, NEW YORK CITY -- Edgar Joins Palestinian, American Christians In Call for Non-Violent
Resistance in Middle East: Is non-violent resistance the best strategy for
peace in the Middle East? NCC General
Secretary Bob Edgar thinks so, recalling that only non-violence was able to break the
gridlock on civil rights in America in the 1960s. Now,
a growing consensus for that approach in the Middle East seems to be developing among
people of faith there as well as in the U.S., Dr. Edgar says. After leading a recent ecumenical delegation to
Israel and Palestine, he has met with a number of religious leaders to discuss the
groups findings. His list of
recommended reading on the non-violence issue includes an article on non-violence and an open letter to Yasser Arafat,
both from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and a proposal
on non-violent resistance from two Palestinian Christians, an Episcopalian
attorney and a Baptist activist.
