Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim comforts Miriam, a
10 year old from Hebron who was wounded by Israeli gunfire nine days earlier as she and
her parents attempted to travel to Jerusalem for dialysis treatment at the Augusta
Victoria Hospital (AVH). Patients, as well as hospital staff, continue to have
difficulties reaching the AVH because of checkpoints and closures. The Augusta Victoria
Hospital is the only pediatric dialysis unit serving the Palestinian areas. (April 25,

Dr. Tawfiq Nasser, Director of the Augusta Victoria
Hospital (AVH) in Jerusalem, explained to the NCC delegation the many difficulties that
Palestinian humanitarian institutions are facing due to the escalation of violence in the
area. Dr. Nasser reported that hospital staff received only one-third of their salaries in
March so that there would be enough money to purchase supplies. He referred to the dilemma
he faces each month, whether to buy medicines or pay 180 employees, as the "CEO's
choice." The AVH serves as a depot for medical supplies that are shifted to hospitals
and clinics in the West Bank. Also pictured: The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., Senior

Rabbi Ron Kronish, Director of the Interreligious
Coordinating Council in Israel, and Yehezkel Landau, Administrative Director of Open
House, spoke of the fear gripping both the Palestinian and Israeli communities at this
time. Mr. Landau, referring to the need for truth and reconciliation, said: "Israeli
Jews add insult to injury by ignoring or covering up what happened in 1948." Mr.
Landau called for a strong peace coalition in the U.S. of interreligious leaders. (April

Bethlehem Food Delivery (April 26, 2002). The NCC
delegation accompanied to Bethlehem and Beit Jala three trucks of food supplies provided
by the Near East Council of Churches and ACT and two trucks of supplies donated by the
girls at the Rosary Sisters School in Beit Hanina, Jerusalem. The NECC/ACT trucks carried
600 cartons, each weighing 30 kg and containing rice, sugar, flour, cooking oil, canned
foods, powdered milk and noodles. One carton supplies five people with enough food for two
to three weeks. Bethlehem has been under curfew in recent days because of the standoff at
the Church of the Nativity. The curfew was lifted briefly, for two hours, four days ago to
allow people to move around to get supplies. (Photo by Mark Brown)
