Andrew Young addresses the NCC General Assembly after his installation as President. At the beginning of the installation service at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, UCC General Minister and President John Thomas leads the congregation in prayer. Anderson is outgoing NCC president. Standing in front of him are Young, President; Elenie K. Huszagh, who will be president in 2002-3; the Rev. Bertrice Y. Wood, vice president at-large; Audrey A. Miller, vice president for national ministries; the Rev. Canon Patrick Mauney, vice president for Church World Service and Witness. At the installation service, Jesse Jackson describes his years of friendship with Andrew Young and describes him as "an authentic link to Martin Luther King."


The Most Rev. Anthony Pilla, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, welcomes the NCC guests to the cathedral. Legendary preacher the Rev. Otis Moss tells the congregation that if their speech is grounded "in the meditation of our hearts," they can change the world. The congregation. Jackson thanks outgoing NCC General Secretary Joan Brown Campbell for her efforts to free imprisoned U.S. servicemen during the war in Yugoslavia.


Heads of NCC communions and their representatives light candles to symbolize the 38 churches that work together in the Council.
