Program Information: Artistry as Gift and Calling

A complementary salutation to the educational spirit of the 50th Anniversary Celebration
of the National Council of Churches, Artistry as Gift and Calling is sponsored by the
Center for Arts and the Church at The First Presbyterian Church in New York City. This
anniversary arts program is produced by Dr. Frank Lloyd Dent, Center Director, in collaboration
with The Old Stone Church and Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, both in
Cleveland. All events are free.

The Rev. Al Carmines, preacher-playwright-composer at pulpit and piano

Ms. Carolyn Halpert, actor-dramatist as Biblical storyteller
3:00 p.m.
The resident Theater Labyrinth showcases this "arts church" with The
Sibyl. The Rev. Dr. Laurinda Hafner, pastor of Pilgrim Congregational UCC, hosts.

Music as Ecumenical Witness: Dedication of New Songs for Unity in
Christ Anniversary Hymns with hymn project coordinator Elder John
Gingrich, a concert artist manager and Moderator, Presbytery of New
York City. Chicago Jazz Mass, hosted by the Rev. Gary Kornell, pastor
of The Old Stone Church.

Pilgrim Jazz Trio featuring Angela Lynard with the gospel/blues musicians
of Pilgrim Congregational UCC. The Art and Soul Meditation Space at
The Old Stone Church opens with the Rev. Dr. Arnold Klukas, art
historian and Pittsburgh pastor, on how diverse arts nurture spiritual
growth.
7:30 p.m.
Here We Stand. Dramatic scenes from classical and modern plays illustrate
conflict between faith and law. Dr. Frank L. Dent, producer, shares arts
initiatives in the history of the National Council of Churches and welcomes
Norris Houghton, Off-Broadway pioneer and former Council consultant,
who conceived Here We Stand. Cleveland actor/director Sara May directs
this staged reading.

1:30 p.m. Drum and percussion ensemble Battu of Cleveland Young Audiences opens
a diverse series of storytellers, poets, authors and other artists sharing
excerpts from their work, as well as insight about the interaction between
creativity and faith.
2:30 p.m.
The Rev. Dr. Arnold Klukas, an art historian, explores how diverse arts
nurture spiritual growth.
3:30 p.m.
Ms. Carolyn Halpert, actor-dramatist and representative of the national
Network of Biblical Storytellers, leads off a sequence of presentations by
colleagues.

Seeing With the Soul. The Rev. Dr. J. Barrie Shepherd, poet-pastor of First
Presbyterian Church, New York City, hosts a "roundtable read-in" for
poets at the Anniversary Celebration.
1:00 p.m.
The Rev. Richard J. Rice, past president of the Network of Biblical
Storytellers and retired Associate Executive Director of New York City's
United Methodist City Society, shares varied works and insight into the
nationwide revival of ancient Christian oral tradition. Additional
presentations scheduled at 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
5:30-7:00 p.m.
Fanfare for The Great Conversation. Diverse languages of melody and
metaphor (in addition to creeds and catechisms) permeate Christian
communions. Three preacher-performersAl Carmines, Peter Gomes
and J. Barrie Shepherdcelebrate various ways to tell and sing
ecumenical hope as a way of "equipping the saints." Light hot supper is

11:00 a.m. Ms. Marsha Dobrzynski, Executive Director of Young Audiences of
Greater Cleveland, introduces Family Under One Sky, a song/story by
Robin Echols Cooper, with tales from Africa and Asia.
Additional presentation at 1:30 p.m.
Noon I'm Not Rappaport. Lively theater perspective on social issues by an
ensemble associated with Case Western Reserve University, Mandel
School of Applied Social Science.

Noon-1:30 p.m. Mid-day Prayer Service for an Inclusive Church begins with
Earthsong, a Cleveland Young Audiences dramatic witness to
environmental awareness, with narrated dance and music.

10:45 a.m. Artistry as Gift and Calling concludes with a pre-millennial conversation
and meditation by Dr. Frank L. Dent and Dr. Arnold Klukas, focused
on imagination, creativity and arts in the future of American churches and
the National Council of Churches.
11:30 a.m. Biblical storytelling, including a dramatic sketch involving St. Paul and
his skeptical scribe.

The Art and Soul Meditation Space at The Old Stone Church, 91 Public Square, is open Tuesday,
November 9, 5:00 -7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, November 10, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.; and Thursday, November 11,
noon - 2:30 p.m. Several works being shown in this space have been donated by individual artists,
as well as by Christians in Visual Arts, a national organization.
