Introducing the Issues
Global AIDS: Facing the
Crisis - a fact sheet from Church World Service,
summarising the challenge AIDS poses in different regions. It includes
information on the danger AIDS poses to food security in the developing
world and the relationships between AIDS and gender, national debt, war,
refugees and culture. It discusses the church’s contribution to the
creation of the AIDS crisis, and provides information on how to support CWS
in its efforts to address it.
HIV and AIDS: The Churches Speak
Out - a four-page
pamphlet by Church World Service. It addresses the issues of
stigmatization of people living with AIDS and the dilemma of access to
treatment.
The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance AIDS fact sheet - contains answers to common questions
about HIV/AIDS. It also includes statistics on the worldwide scope of the
disease. Available in English, Spanish and French.
Inspiring Stories of People Living with AIDS
– links to moving and thought-provoking short stories about the experience
of living with AIDS from the perspective of friends, parents, partners,
missionaries, and children in both American and international contexts.
Many of these stories, provided by Global Ministries of the United
Methodist Church, would be effective discussion starters, bulletin
inserts, or central readings for more in-depth study sessions.

AIDS Game
–
an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America web-based teaching tool
which resembles a one-player board game and teaches children about the
challenges and sources of hope for people living with AIDS in Africa.
Lutheran World Relief AIDS Quiz
– a learning activity, which can be used with an internet connection or
printed and is suitable for use with youth or adults. It would be a good
introduction to a lesson or presentation or could be used as a bulletin
insert. Cites 2005 information.
Create a Quiz or Take a
Quiz- AVERT, an international AIDS
charity based in the UK, provides quizzes on topics including sex, World
AIDS Day, AIDS statistics, and Women & HIV. The quizzes are available
online or as pdf files or you can use their web tool to create your own
quiz using AVERT's questions. Note: not all of the questions are suitable
for all audiences.
AIDS
Ministry and Christian Hospitality – a Bible study discussing
the Christian notion of hospitality as a response to HIV/AIDS. It would be
useful as background reading or read as an opening for a discussion group.
Presented by Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.
Join Hands, Stop Aids
Toolkit – an excellent 4-session curriculum for
youth groups or Sunday schools published by the Mennonite Central
Committee. Lesson plans, handouts, images, and bulletin inserts can be
downloaded as pdf files and an optional video can be borrowed or purchased.
HIV/AIDS
and You – a short three-part youth curriculum from the Orthodox
Church in America. It focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention and on compassion
for those with the disease. The menu at the top of the page links to the
lesson plans.
A Holy Week Reflection on the African AIDS Crisis
- a study series for adults published by Church
World Service, including Biblical readings, reflections, discussion
questions and prayers. The described CD is not necessary to make full use
of the series.
Flesh
of our Flesh – a small group study in pdf format. It encourages
discussion on Mark 5:24-25 and HIV/AIDS. Page 6 of the document suggests
other passages which might be used for HIV/AIDS small group discussion. It
can be used in conjunction with the Flesh
of our Flesh worship service. Provided by Christian Aid.
Facing Aids:
Education in the Context of Vulnerability - HIV/AIDS - A four-module study guide for use with adults or
older youth based on the World Council of Churches' 1997 study
document, Facing AIDS: The Challenge, The Churches' Response.
Includes key excerpts from the study document, Bible study passages,
discussion activities, and guidelines for taking action.
A Generation of Hope
– a set of resources from the United Methodist Church discussing the
struggle of AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe, including a downloadable video, study
guide, fact sheets, and bulletin inserts.

– an article from the Orthodox Church in American detailing how one
parish supported three of its parishioners suffering from AIDS.
Covenant to Care
– a United Methodist Church program which encourages congregations
to welcome people affected by HIV/AIDS and provides resources for becoming
inclusive communities, including Created and Loved by
God: A Handbook for Starting a Covenant to Care Ministry with
People Living with AIDS by Nancy A. Carter.
HIV/AIDS and the Curriculum: Methods of Integrating
HIV/AIDS into Theological Programmes
- A collection of essays published by the World Council of Churches
that "represents our efforts in the continent of Africa to contribute
towards the struggle against HIV and AIDS". The collection came out of
workshops to train theological educators on how to implement the HIV and
AIDS curriculum in their educational institutions. It is also for those in
the church who need to deal with HIV and AIDS. Chapters which may be useful
to those providing pastoral care include Counselling and HIV/AIDS.

Council of Religious AIDS Networks
- Database of AIDS ministries in the United States, organized by state.
Presbyterian
AIDS Network - seeks to empower people living
with HIV and AIDS and those who minister to them. The website contains
links to resources and opportunities for support and network membership.
Computerized AIDS Ministries - a
private and confidential electronic mailing list maintained by the United
Methodist Committee on Relief. It supports people living with HIV/AIDS,
their friends and families, and those interested in AIDS ministries. It
uses the motto “There is more to living with AIDS than AIDS”
The Balm in Gilead - works with
faith communities to address the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS among the
African diaspora. Its programs include initiatives on HIV testing, leadership
development, and the Black Church Week of Prayer
Internationally
The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of
Rwanda - works with
Church World Services to support households headed by HIV/AIDS affected
children and enable orphaned or vulnerable children to access secondary
education. The YWCA helped CWS develop the Giving Hope Program model, which is
now used in communities around sub-Saharan Africa.

- the PEDRA Program encourages girls to stay in school, provides
after-school programming, leadership development and HIV/AIDS awareness

Opportunities for Action
Getting Started – links to

guide to getting involved in action against HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on

What Religious Leaders Can Do About HIV/AIDS
- a 60 page workbook in pdf format, available in English and French.
The publication, by the World Council of Religions for Peace, UNICEF
and UNAIDS, is a response to a call by the African Religious Leaders’
Assembly on Children and HIV and AIDS for tool and resources to use in
responding to the crisis. The workbook draws from information sources of
various faith communities and has been tested and reviewed by religious
leaders in Africa and Asia as well as by others representing faith-based
organizations and networks worldwide.
The Faith-Based HIV/AIDS National Technical
Assistance Center – a program of The Balm in Gilead
designed to support churches and community organizations that wish to work
with Black churches on AIDS issues

- Resources include: a) It Can Happen To You: HIV and AIDS & The Older

About HIV and AIDS (video), and d) Presbyterian Stories—Volume II: Stories,

Affirming Persons-Saving Lives
– (FREE) Comprehensive curriculum for AIDS prevention published for
Christian churches by the United Church of Christ. Includes lesson plans
for adults, teenagers and children. The curriculum is designed to help
churches become learning centers to protect lives threatened by the AIDS
epidemic.
Facing AIDS: The Challenge, The Churches’ Response
– a 1997 book published by the World Council of Churches for sale with
freely downloadable study guide, Facing Aids: Education in the Context of
Vulnerability. Focuses on themes of COMMUNITY, CHANGE, VULNERABILITY and
CARE AND PREVENTION.
Love in a Time of AIDS – World
Council of Churches book focuses on how confronting women’s vulnerability
to AIDS is related to their social, economic and cultural status. It
challenges the church to change help change attitudes towards women as part
of its HIV/AIDS ministry.
Coming to Say Goodbye: Stories of AIDS in Africa
– a 30 minute DVD and study guide from Maryknoll Productions. Stories
of people living with AIDS are interspersed with commentaries by church
workers, medical professionals, and social workers. The DVD discusses both
personal and structural dimensions of AIDS in Africa.
Braving AIDS: Senegal's Way –
(FREE) a video and discussion guide for audiences over 14 years old, from Lutheran
World Relief, discussing Senegal's strategy for responding to the
threat of AIDS and the involvement of an LWR partnership.
Epidemic Africa – (FREE) a 15
minute video for older youth and adults discussing the problems facing
children and families affected by AIDS, and some programs that are helping.
It includes an introduction and conclusion from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
