What Is PCEM?
PCEM is one of fourteen program ministry committees of the Education and Leadership Ministries Commission (ELMC) of the National Council of Churches (NCC).
| PCEM Mission: To help member denominations inspire their congregations to commit themselves to being partners in God's Mission. |
Five objectives flow out of this mission statement:
- Identify themes on significant mission issues and develop programmatic emphases for use by denominations to inspire involvement and action.
- Provide an arena for collaboration on education resource development.
- Provide a forum for the study of missiological trends and addressing related issues.
- Provide a place for mission educators to network by sharing their resources, expertise, experience, conference findings and the like.
- Provide ways to hear the voices of people of faith in churches around the world.
Mission today is no longer the sole work of specialists, such as missionaries or denominational officials. All of us are called to serve the mission of the church. Indeed, as Emil Brunner has said: "The Church exists by mission as fire exists by burning." PCEM seeks to help Christians fulfill their mandate to serve that mission of the church.
How does PCEM work?
PCEM meets twice a year, in the spring and in the fall, to establish and work on a geographical or general theme for denominational mission education efforts.

Resource persons - experts on the topics - are invited to these meetings to assist committee members in understanding how to present these areas. Resources (print, video, Internet) are either produced for the committee or identified, and information about them is made available via Bibliographies and Videographies.
Most member denominations then take part in one or both studies - though times may vary in terms of when a study is emphasized, given specific denominational priorities.
Staff
Oversight for the work of PCEM is given by staff of the Education and Leadership Ministries Commission. For more information, contact Garland F. Pierce, gpierce@ncccusa.org, or 212-870-2267.
