POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Associate General Secretary for Education and Leadership Ministries
guides the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the
POSITION SUMMARY
·
The Associate General Secretary is
an elected senior level staff person with primary responsibility to
provide administrative, programmatic, and advocacy leadership in
education and leadership ministries.
·
The duties of this office require
maintaining and expanding ecumenical networks of communions and agencies
focused on a range of education and leadership emphases, in partnership
with an active Education and Leadership Ministries Commission.
·
The incumbent is a crucial member
and peer colleague of a collaborative team and serves
NCC with the other senior staff and their respective
Commissions throughout the National Council of Churches, working to
provide support to educational and leadership efforts.
·
The Associate General Secretary for
Education and Leadership Ministries is accountable to the General
Secretary of NCC.
·
Provide ongoing assessment and
planning for the over all responsibility of ELMC and its program
ministry committees.
·
Other responsibilities as assigned
by the General Secretary in support of ELMC and the broader ministries
and administration of the Council.
QUALIFICATIONS
·
A deep personal commitment to
ecumenical partnerships, the vision/mission of ELMC and NCCUSA, and the
essential place of educational and leadership ministries in the life of
the local congregation is expected. A willingness to be prophetic and
visionary as well as to serve as advocate for such ministries,
ecumenically realized, in the life of church. To do this job
successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
to the highest possible standard. The requirements listed below are
representative, but not exhaustive, of the knowledge, skill, and/or
ability required for this position.

The Associate General Secretary for
Education and Leadership Ministries must be a member in good standing of
an NCCUSA member communion.
·

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS
Education:
·
A graduate degree or its equivalent
in experience is required, with emphasis or prior experience in
Christian education.
·
Knowledge of theology, scripture,
human development, as well as the structure and polity of the National
Council of Churches is required.
Experience:
·
Experience in office and financial
management, planning, executing, and evaluating projects, working in a
variety of settings with persons of different cultures is essential.
·
Experience with working with an
accountable board and in a multiple-staff environment is also required.
·
Familiarity with the wider
ecumenical movement is desirable, as is the ability to work with persons
from a wide range of theological and ecclesiological traditions.
·
An understanding of ecclesial
communities and protocols: as well as of ecumenical history and
relationship is desired.
·
An understanding of the
opportunities and challenges of the NCC and its communion constituency
is helpful.
Skills:
·
Knowledge of pertinent issues in
Christian education, leadership development, faith formation, and
curriculum development, as well as familiarity with various communions,
agencies, and professional organizations working in these fields.
·
Group process, conflict management,
volunteer motivation, and managing competing and conflicting priorities
are essential.
