PROFILE

Rev. John L. McCullough
Executive Director
Church World Service

John L. McCulloughRev. John L. McCullough of Montclair, New Jersey, is Executive Director of Church World Service, an international humanitarian agency providing emergency relief, advocacy, sustainable development, and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries.

Since joining Church World Service in June of 2000, Rev. McCullough has been at the forefront of the organization’s expanding role as advocates for human rights and the empowerment of civil society in developing countries.

In January 2003 Rev. McCullough served as a member of a high level humanitarian research mission to Iraq sponsored by the Center for Social and Economic Rights. Prior to the Iraq war, he was a key spokesperson for Church World Service’s position protesting the U.S. pre-emptive strike against Iraq and against military control of humanitarian response within Iraq.

Rev. McCullough has been a prime mover in Church World Service’s expanding commitment to Africa. In March 2003, he was invited to present to members of the UN HABITAT community his vision for CWS to guide the establishment of School Safe Zones across Africa.

In July 2002, he led an ecumenical peacemaking delegation to four countries in West Africa, and in March of 2003 he hosted a return delegation of West African church and grassroots leaders to meet and advocate with United Nations, U.S. government officials, and U.S. ecumenical groups, urging international attention to the escalating crisis in Liberia.

In November 2003, McCullough co-led a humanitarian delegation to North and South Korea, as a part of Church World Service’s ongoing humanitarian aid and support for the people of  North Korea.

He has keynoted and introduced a variety of humanitarian conferences and symposia. With the courage to speak on behalf of what may be perceived as the “less popular” humanitarian causes, he joined Senator Ted Kennedy in opening the CWS-sponsored Haitian Migration Crisis Conference in Washington, D.C., in February 2003,

His broad international experience includes pastorates in the U.S. and Kenya and leadership within the United Methodist Church’s Board of Global Ministries, where he presented more than 1,150 persons for commissioning into mission service. He administered a program that awarded assistance to more than 700 students around the world and introduced numerous mission initiatives including Missioners of Hope and Volunteers for Africa. He received Boston University School of Theology’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2003.
