Orvin Kimbrough
Executive Director
Faith Beyond Walls and Interfaith Partnership of Missouri
Imagine
being an 8-year-old African-American child living in a rundown apartment in
a poor neighborhood in one of the country’s largest cities. One morning,
you wake to find your drug-addicted mother dead on the floor of your family
home. Without a father in your life, you’re catapulted into a decade-long
journey through the state foster care system.
Rather than give in to societal pressures,
you make the right choices when faced with obstacles. You turn to people
you can trust for advice. Focused, you survive the foster care experience
and, despite a lack of financial resources, set your sights on college.
Today, you have three college degrees to your credit. You’re building a
successful career in the nonprofit sector, and pursuing your personal
aspirations. And, most importantly, you’re a husband and father. That’s
quite a scenario.
The 29-year-old Orvin Kimbrough doesn’t have
to imagine it. Instead, he lived it. His life story. And he gladly shares
his story with audiences across the country.
Kimbrough believes his story – one of
perseverance and faith – can open doors for Faith Beyond Walls, and
Interfaith Partnership two St. Louis-based nonprofit organizations he
leads. After all, his personal and professional goals center around
creating opportunities for individuals and faith-based organizations to have
a meaningful and measurable impact on the quality of life in the community,
as well as empowering people to empower themselves.
Prior to his involvement with Faith Beyond
Walls, and Interfaith Partnership, Kimbrough served on the staff of the
Vashon/Jeff-Vander-Lou Initiative. Most recently, he managed day-to-day
operations as associate director for the community development organization.
Kimbrough's educational accomplishments
include bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University
of Missouri – Columbia in 1998 and 2000, respectively, as well as a Master
of Business Administration from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in
2002.
He serves on the boards of several local
organizations, including: Area Resources for Community and Human Services;
Advisory Board of the Regional Health
Commission; St. Louis Children’s Hospital Healthy Kids at Play Committee.
Kimbrough and his wife of five years,
Latriece, have two children, Maddison Elizabeth, and Matthew Jacob.
