WESTERN STEERING COMMITTEE REPORT
By Richard ("Dick") MacMillan
The Western Steering Committee meets on the second Tuesday of most months at the LICC's Hempstead office. It handles the concerns of the council in outreach activities, particularly in the Nassau County area. The "Total" figure is the sum of the individuals in the children, adult and senior column for each month. Note that the monthly totals, which represent the number of individuals fed, increases substantially toward the end of the year as the economy continued to deteriorate. However, the number of households increases only slightly, indicating that household size is increasing, with more seniors and children moving in.
The Women at the Well programs for incarcerated women have demonstrated their ability to reduce recidivism in those it serves, but has been temporarily discontinued because of lack of funding.
The Gift of the Heart Kit program for Church World Service (CWS) has been supported by coordinating Kit preparation by local church members and the CWS-supplied truck transport of the finished Kits to the CWS processing center in Maryland. The Kits are stored in the Maryland Center and other locations, and provide disaster relief throughout the world in times of need.
The Committee also has taken on responsibility for the LICC's annual Easter Dawn Service at Jones Beach, which has attracted a substantial following in recent years, with estimated attendance of more than 200 in 2008.
