The Long Island Council of Churches (LICC) is the coordinating body for the ecumenical work of churches in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Its mission is to unite diverse Christians to work together to improve living conditions on Long Island, and to promote understanding and cooperation between Christians and non-Christians. LICC's professional staff works with volunteer leaders to implement programs and activities that assist the poor, needy and powerless on Long Island from all walks of life.

The LICC works with over 40 public and private health and social service agencies throughout Long Island to provide emergency food, housing, medical assistance, transportation assistance, chaplaincy services, disaster relief, and advocacy for a wide range of social issues including affordable housing, adequate health care, the environment, social, racial and gender equality, anti-poverty and anti-bias programs, prison reform, substance abuse and domestic violence programs. We also support legislation for universal health care.

Ninety-four percent of the clients we serve through our offices in Hempstead (Nassau County) and Riverhead (Suffolk County) are low to moderate income. Most are minority populations as well. A staff of dedicated full-time and part-time clergy and laypeople operate these programs under the direction of the Rev. Tom Goodhue, Executive Director. The Long Island Council of Churches is governed by a Board of Governors comprised of local clergy, lay denominational representatives, and members of the local business and nonprofit communities. The Council is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization.
