An Adventure in Solidarity
NCC Study Seminar to Brazil
April 4-18, 2004

This trip will provide an opportunity for committed Christians to have a firsthand experience in Brazil and to observe results of the first year of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government. The itinerary, which includes São Paulo, Goiás Velho, the capital city of Brasília, and Rio de Janeiro, offers a chance to meet with Brazilians from many walks of life and to explore ways we can live in solidarity with the people of Brazil.

The group will travel to Brazil on Sunday evening, April 4, leaving from Miami at 9:30 p.m., and will return to Miami, arriving at 7:00 a.m. on April 18.

Highlights include:

· Seminars on the history of Latin America and Brazil, and on Liberation Theology in today’s Brazil.
·
Contacts with Protestant, Catholic and Pentecostal church leaders and with government representatives.
·
Visits with grassroots organizations including Movement of the Landless, groups working with street children, and the People’s Central Institute in Rio, the country’s oldest social service community center.
·
Holy Weekend in a Benedictine Monastery in the Goiás Velho, a city founded early in Brazil’s colonial history.
·
Trips to tourist sites, including Corcovado and Sugar Loaf in Rio, and Iguaçu Falls, the world’s largest waterfall.

Knowledge of Portuguese, while helpful, is not essential, as translation will be provided.

Arrangements for the trip are being made by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC). The Rev. Fred Morris, the NCC’s Director for Latin American and Caribbean Relations, who will lead the group, lived in Brazil for 13 years as a missionary of the United Methodist Church.
