How are Christians responding to the changing religious landscape of the United States? What shape might future U.S. ecumenical cooperation take? How can U.S. Christians best respond to religious persecution around the world? What are the "dos" and "don'ts" of ministry among deaf people?

These were among the many issues with which the NCC's 270-member General Assembly wrestled at its 1997 annual meeting, November 11-14 in Washington, D.C.

The General Assembly is the primary legislative body of the National Council of Churches. Founded in 1950, the NCC is the nation's leading ecumenical organization and the locus for a wide array of ministries, including dialogue, education and the pursuit of greater Christian unity.

General Assembly delegates come from across the United States and officially represented their denominations (also known as "communions").

As this year's meeting begins, the NCC welcomed a new member communion -- the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India. That brings the total number of NCC Member Communions to 34, with, in turn, 52 million congregants in the United States.
