Welcome from the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Edgar
General Secretary, National Council of Churches

Welcome to the NCC's Web Site! As you browse these pages, you will glimpse life-changing ministries made possible whenbobwebwelcome-small.jpg (34594 bytes) churches live and work together in Christian unity. We hope you will want to discover more -- about the NCC and the whole ecumenical movement of which we are a part.

For our member church bodies, to follow Christ is also to seek unity and reconciliation, a calling they reflect in many ways. Therefore, if you are among the more than 50 million people who belong to an NCC member communion, you may find much in these pages that is familiar.

But at our best, we ALL are ecumenical -- a term Christians use to refer to the great household of God, which is large and diverse, holding an honored place for each and every person. What a sustaining image as we seek greater peace and justice for our global household, amid the violence and fragmentation of today's world.

In these pages, you will find highlights of the NCC's part in this great ecumenical movement. You will also find exciting ways to connect with ministries that touch people as near as a study group in your congregation, as far as a village half a world away.   Through the NCC, members join with partners in more than 80 countries, in ministries of disaster relief, development and refugee assistance; unity, justice, Christian education, Bible translation, and public witness.

Together we are embarked on a comprehensive, ten-year mobilization to address the issue of poverty, with local and regional councils of churches and wonderful national partners such as Habitat for Humanity, Children's Defense Fund, Families USA, and Call to Renewal.   At the same time, we are reaching out with other Christian groups to join hands in building a larger, more inclusive ecumenical table for the 21st century.

We would like to hear your ideas on how together we might better serve the church -- and the world that God so loves. You may send e-mail to news@ncccusa.org . Please let us hear from you!

Grace and Peace,
Dr. Bob Edgar
