Some Major Justice Initiatives by the NCC's Ecumenical Community

"Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison,
and did not take care of you?" Then he will answer them, "Truly I tell you,
just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me."

                                                               Matthew 25:44-45 NRSV

Ecumenical Advocacy Days an annual event bringing 700+ Christians to Washington to discuss issues ranging from economic justice to international affairs and peace, teaching them ways to make a difference through legislative advocacy, and a day on Capitol Hill to put their concerns into action. Let Justice Roll:  a poverty- reduction program initiated by the NCC to address poverty in America through efforts to increase the minimum wage; now with more than 80 partner organizations, Let Justice Roll has been successful in raising the minimum wage in advocacy campaigns in a dozen states.
NCC Eco-Justice Program: a national network of the NCC's member faith groups reaching out in grassroots support of new ideas in meeting the challenge of climate change, energy efficiency and environmental health; hailed as one of the most effective advocacy efforts ever developed by the churches. Donate. Save Darfur: NCC is a member of this coalition to raise public awareness and mobilize a massive response to atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region, assuring humanitarian aid, conditions for the safe, voluntary return of displaced persons, promoting long-term sustainability, holding perpetrators accountable.
Special Commission on the Just Rebuilding of the Gulf Coast:  an initiative of the NCC Governing Board to respond to multiple community needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; the commission seeks to hold government and churches accountable for continuing their work in the region. Justice for Women Working Group:  a special emphasis on the unique justice needs of women in the U.S. and abroad,  remembering past women leaders, focusing on key issues such as human trafficking and domestic violence, and developing leadership opportunities for young women.
National Farm Worker Ministry:  This ecumenical and interfaith organization, founded in 1920 to provide food, clothing and day care to poor farm workers, today works with them to press for justice and equal treatment, and to achieve fundamental change in their living and working conditions. Middle East Peace:  NCC and 13 of its communions are part of a church-based coalition seeking a U.S. foreign policy that avoids and resolves armed conflicts, values human rights, arms control and foreign aid, and protects the unique nature of Jerusalem as sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims.
Corporations dominate the city skyline Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility:  This ministry raises the prophetic voice of faith in the marketplace, to change the way companies conduct themselves as good corporate citizens, helping transform how they relate to investors, stakeholders and the global community. First Amendment Law of Church and State:  This five-volume research masterpiece, prepared by former NCC religious liberty director Dean Kelley, has been published online by the First Amendment Center as a resource for all persons interested in key legal issues between church and government in the United States.
A Social Creed for the 21st Century:  a concise summary of the churches' views on the major issues facing society, "putting social ethics on a clear theological base".  Adopted by the NCC General Assembly in 2007, the wide-ranging document updates the ground-breaking Social Creed of 1908. Agricultural Missions: This ecumenical movement, founded in 1930, seeks to accompany and support people of faith and conscience around the world who are facing the challenges of globalization, poverty and injustice that affect rural communities, working toward a sustainable society.
National Religious Partnership on the Environment:  NCC was a founding member of this coalition of Protestants, Jews,  Orthodox, Evangelicals and Catholics uniting around environmental stewardship -- protecting land, air and water from abuse and neglect. Faithful America:  an online advocacy community launched by NCC in the wake of the Abu Ghraib torture scandals; it subsequently grew to more than 100,000 participants, and in late 2007 was given to Faith in Public Life to aid in its further development as a vehicle for advocacy by people of faith.
